PRIZES: 100% of entry fees (5% to go to GTCL Grand Prix fund),

GTCL Grand Prix 2007
Greater Toronto Chess League is pleased to announce Grand Prix 2007 series! 
 GTCL invites all chess clubs and organizers submit their bids for the Grand Prix 2007 tournaments!

GTCL Grand Prix 2007 series will include the following 5 tournaments: 

1)  March Open – March 16-18, 5 rounds

2)  Toronto Open – April 6-8, 6 rounds

3)  Canada Day Open – June 29-July 1, 5 rounds - TBA

4)  Thanksgiving Open – October 6-8, 6 rounds - TBA

5)  Holidays Open – December 26-30, 6 rounds - TBA

Grand Prix prizes will be awarded to players who get the most points accumulated for all 5 tournaments in the following 5 categories:

1)   Open,

2)   Under 2200,

3)   Under 2000,

4)   Under 1800,

5)   Under 1600.

5% from each tournament’s prize fund will be set aside for Grand Prix fund.

CFC Membership is required.

Chess Camps across the province of Ontario.

Do smart kids play chess
or does chess make kids smart?

Chess encourages patience, sharp memory, the ability to concentrate, problem solving skills, and the understanding that certain behaviors carry certain consequences.  In addition, chess:

  • demands both inductive and deductive reasoning.
  • requires students to look at a problem, break it down, and then put the whole thing back together.
  • involves recall, analysis, judgment, and abstract reasoning.
  • improves decision-making skills.
  • increases players’ self-confidence and improves organizational habits.

Chess is a tool for teaching other skills as well, such as concentration and critical thinking. And it can help build student self-esteem. Indeed, it's a game that can change kids' lives!

Book a Local Chess Camp

The Ontario Chess Association Inc., in co-operation with York Region Sports, and different cities across Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Corporation, and corporate sponsors are investing in chess camps and chess training to help our youth. The chess camps are affordable and fees may be waived in cases of financial need. 

We all want the best for our youth. We all want the best in physical, spiritual and mental health. These chess camps provide structured mental activity in an organized and fun environment. Students learn knowledge, techniques and abilities that they can test immediately and inwardly know when they improve! You do not have to be a Star or win the tournament to feel good about yourself. This self-esteem and learned abilities can last a lifetime. Chess is a game that can be enjoyed by all ages. Whether our youth play for a short time or enjoy the sport for a lifetime, the fundamentals learned can help strengthen the foundation of our youth forever!

The OCA is standardizing on FIDE Master Roman Pelts’s newest training programs and training materials. One of the world's leading chess trainers, and with over 40 years of teaching experience, he is the premier chess coach in Canada today. 

Most chess camps are youth camps focused on ages 7 – 18 with multiple instructors to separate instructional training based on participant playing strength from beginner to advanced.  

Fun is planned throughout with competitions (with prizes) every day. These camps are the opportunity to greatly enhance your chess skills, and develop better strategic planning, analysis and patience skills.

    The full results are buried at the bottom of the Canadian Junior thread below. At the 36th Canadian Junior in Toronto, Leonid Gerzhoy became the first player ever to make a perfect score in this event. Raja Panjwani placed 2nd with 5-1.

    As in the first Canadian Junior in 1970, Vlad Dobrich was the organizer.

    "Missing" were 9 of the top 10 in the November 2006 Under 20 list published in Chess Canada. The two winners should have been among those top 10. Looks like nobody bothered to transfer their birthdates from the July 2005 FIDE rating list to the CFC database. Anyway, with 3 of the top 12 in the country, this was the strongest Canadian Junior in the past three years, but not as representative of the top talent as events 10, 20, 30 years ago.

    There are many factors, several of which have been mentioned in the thread below.
    1. The World Junior is not as important as it used to be. Players such as Radjabov and Carlsen have never bothered to play in a World Junior.
    2. The Canadian Junior is not as important as it used to be. Players can get ratings and titles without competing in it.
        The Junior is no longer a "gateway" to international competition.
    3. The CFC no longer sponsors ($$) the Canadian Junior. The entry fee is $150, it used to be much lower.
    4. As an open event, it no longer has the cachet of meeting and beating the best. The open nature of the event makes it harder for players to gain support for travel from their provincial chess associations, or even through fund-raising. Travel and accommodation costs are much greater than the $150 entry fee. The Ontario High School Chess Championship 2007
(Fri May 11 – Sun May 13)  will be held at Trent University, Peterborough.   A highway coach service will be available from Toronto.

Students in Grades 7 and 8 (“Junior High School”) are most welcome.  Students in Grades 1 through 6, who can compete with older players, are also welcome.

Students stay in the university residence; some students and parents stay in nearby hotels.

In addition to Individual Prizes, the tournament offers Team Prizes and Combined Team Prizes:

A team consists of the top 3 players from a school in one section; A combined team consists of  3  players: the top player in each section from the same school.
