HISTORY OF BLITZ CHAMPIONSHIP:

Players adapt as the technology changes. For a long time speed chess was 10 seconds a move, every move. Maybe one of today's clubs should try out this historic type of speed.
Here's some Toronto pre-clock speed history:

The first "rapid transit tourney" held in Toronto was on Nov 19, 1909 at the Toronto C. C.. It was twenty seconds a move and won by junior J. S. Morrison.

In October 1912 The Toronto C. C. had a series of ‘rapid transit knockout tournaments' each Tuesday, 25 cents entry fee. "The timekeeper shall star the play by calling ‘move.' and the first move must be instantly be made at each table. After ten seconds and at the end of each interval of ten seconds thereafter he shall call ‘move.'. . . . Tourneys of this kind have proved very popular in other clubs. The tendency of the rapid play is to minimize the advantage of the stronger players over the weaker and to play all-comers on as equal footing as possible."

In April 1932 a rapid-transit tournament at the Jordan Club had 24 players and when the umpire shouted: "White" and all the players with white would move at once, then 10 seconds later "Black" and all the players with Black would move. "J. H. Belson, newly-crowned champion of Toronto, won the fast man's honors."

May 18, 1940 rapid transit tournament at Valleyview C.C. had 23 players, "The time limit was ten seconds per move and, as a consequence, the play was reckless, exciting, and above all entertaining." A 12-year-old won a group.

Aug 12, 1944 the Star's chess column reprinted a letter from a soldier in Italy thanking for the donation of chess books and the solder had a 11-man lightening tournament, 10 seconds a move won by Sam J. W. Jeffrey, one of his wins published.

Oct 28, 1944 Howard Ridout gave "an exhibition of rapid transit with a five-second limit on moves" as part of the Toronto Chess League Festival at the Central Y.M.C.A, winning most of his games.

Nov 2, 1946 Anderson won the Toronto rapid championship tourney undefeated, Avery second.

Nov 1 1947 "Frank Anderson, Toronto chess champion, won the Ontario speed title .. by defeating 16 experts in a ‘lightning' tournament at the Gambit Chess Club" He won 10-0, then Crompton 8, Hayes of Kitchener 7, and Roy Orlando 6. 10 seconds per move.

1950 Toronto "Rapid Transit" championship at the Gambit Club, Tuesday 8pm.

Jul 7, 1951 Anderson won the Gambit CC "speed" championship 10.5-.5, 10 seconds per move.

Jan 23, 1954 "The Toronto ‘speed' championship attracted 40 entries to the Ukrainian C. C. last Saturday." Fuster went 20-0, in the finals Anderson 10-1, Siemms 8.5, Sarosy 7.

Jan 28, 1954 "Rapid Chess" will be part of the Ontario Chess Association events at the first Canadian International Hobby and Homecraft Show at the CNE, on Thursday evening, Feb. 12.

May 22, 1954 Frank Anderson won the Ontario "speed" championship 15-0 ahead of Fuster 13, Krestini and Siemms 11, Vaitonis 9.5... Sarosy 7.5.

Aug 14, 1954 speed match Fuster 11.5-8.5 Anderson, half played at 10 seconds a move 6-4 and half at five-minutes 5.5-4.5. So could be the introduction of chess clocks to Toronto.

Jul 23, 1955 game published in the Star chess column from an international "lightning" tourney, 10 minutes per game.

Jun 23, 1956 Geza Fuster won the Toronto Speed Championship tournament at the German Club Harmonie scoring 9-0 in the preliminaries and 8-0 in the finals. Then Ginsberg and Glasberg 6, Zager and Grimshaw 3.5... Orlando 2. , Sat. 1:30 pm..
