Beginners’ group
A free beginners’ class starts at 6:30 pm, each Monday, to teach new members of all ages the elements of the game. Private lessons can also be arranged.
Children’s tournaments
Children’s lessons and tournaments will run from 6:30 to 8:00 pm each Monday. Run by Canadian chess Olympian, Liza Orlova and Ian Mahoney. Players receive a CFC rating. Junior members are also welcome to play in the regular tournaments from 7:30 to 10:30pm.
Tournaments
The ACC organises a range of tournaments to suit all interests and abilities:
Regular tournaments: One round each Monday night, run from 7:30 to 10:30 pm.
Time control: Sudden death/90 – You and your opponent have 90 minutes each to complete all your moves in the game.
Swiss pairing system: Each round, you’ll face an opponent who has the same score as you.
CFC-rated games: All players receive a national rating by Canada’s chess governing body, the Chess Federation of Canada
Byes: Players can request a half-point bye for the round (except the last round of a tournament) if they are unable to attend. Members can join an ongoing tournament at any time, with byes.
Casual chess
Members are welcome to play friendly games before and after—or instead of—the regular tournament game. Chess960 is also encouraged.
Chess Lectures
Come at 7:00 pm, before the tournament round starts, to hear an experienced player discuss an aspect of chess, or walk you through some of his or her own games. Oct. 18, 2010 – GM Mark Bluvshtein

GM Bluvshtein lecture Feb 28
Hello, chess friends!
I'm writing to announce a special chess lecture at the Annex Chess Club, by Canada's top grandmaster, GM Mark Bluvshtein.
You are invited to attend the lecture, but also to help choose the games that he will cover. I've attached the list of four options GM Mark Bluvshtein sent - we are to select two of them. Voting will take place at the club this Monday, February 14.
Here are the details of the lecture (please fwd to anyone you know who might be interested):
When: February 28, 2011 @ 7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30)
Where: Annex Chess Club, 918 Bathurst St (just N of Bloor)
Cost: $20 (free for ACC members) includes coffee and casual chess after the talk
GM Mark Bluvshtein is Canada’s top FIDE-rated grandmaster, but also a local hero: he grew up in North York, attending Newtonbrook Secondary School and York University.
Mark is currently playing in the Aeroflot Open in Moscow. This is the latest stop on his tour of top chess tournaments, which included the Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee.
When he returns to Toronto, he will be delivering a lecture at the Annex Chess Club, featuring games from his recent international tournaments.
I hope you can join us!
Yours truly,
Marcus Wilker
